Peter Murphy at Emo’s
The man credited with spearheading and personifying the gothic rock movement, Peter Murphy, is bringing his solo show to the Emo’s outdoor stage this Thursday. In the early ’80s when Peter Murphy was fronting the highly influential band Bauhaus, who are generally considered the first gothic rock group ever, Murphy’s presence was such a powerful and all-consuming force that he immediately became identified as the Godfather of the goth movement.
Part glam rock and part punk, Bauhaus was wholly its own creation and one that spawned legions of imitators and even some innovators. After disbanding Bauhaus in 1983 Murphy began a prolific solo career that has resulted in a string of albums and recent tours with the likes of Nine Inch Nails.
To coincide with the staggered release of 4 new single covers, Peter Murphy’s current “Secret Cover Tour” will include a preview of new material from his forthcoming, post-Bauhaus reunion album. The LAist caught one of his shows last week and had some great things to say:
“The energetic encore of twists and turns ended with Murphy’s own spin on one of Bowies classics, making it very much his own but what else would you expect from Murphy? I went in expected to see an aging man give an aging performance of his greatest hits for the almighty dollar and came out realizing I’d seen a truly underrated legend with one of the strongest live voices I’d ever heard, that made me want to go home and pull out every dusty CD of his that hadn’t seen the light of day.”
You can see this underrated legend in Austin on Thursday night at Emo’s. Do512 is happy to hook up one lucky person with a pair of tickets to the show simply by clicking “I Like It!” on the event listing.
