Grupo de Rua Dance Company is Coming to Austin!

If there’s one generalization that can be made about Austinites, it’s that we are very in to self expression. You can see and hear proof of this all over town, any given day or night in our unique murals scattered across town, the quirky street musicians down on SoCo, or even original food concepts like Gourdough’s. Austin likes to try new things – and the weirder they are, the better.

One local group that does a bang-up job of broadening Austin’s horizons is Texas Performing Arts. Stationed in the University of Texas College of Fine Arts, this hard-working and gifted team serves the community by literally bringing the world to Austin. Texas Performing Arts has six unique venues with reputations for housing some of the most sought-after and cherished events around town. There is no doubt that the very original Grupo de Rua performance on February 9 will reinforce such renown.

Grupo de Rua is a Brazilian dance company that was founded by Bruno Beltrão in 1996. The group’s form of sincere artistic expression through fusing uninhibited street and contemporary dance with hip hop has revolutionized dance across the globe. They even wire the floor so the audience can hear the distinct sounds made by their feet, creating a very raw and intimate vibe throughout the entire performance. Here’s a video of Grupo de Rua on stage:

Needless to say, this is definitely not something you want to miss. Grupo de Rua is performing at Hogg Auditorium on Tuesday, February 9, at 8pm. Tickets are available through TexasPerformingArts.org. Be sure to check out the event listing on Do512 for more information.
