Clipse: Live in Austin 3/25

Don’t even think for a second that with SXSW rolling out of town in two Sundays, big name acts won’t be around the following week to continue to blow our minds and our sound systems. On Thursday, March 25th, Score More, Polaris Presents, Complete Clothing, Keep It Local, and are bringing legendary hip-hop duo, Clipse, to Ace’s Lounge on dirty 6th, supported by Kevin Jack, Drastik, Vonnegutt, and The League of Extraoridnary G’z.

In 1992, Norfolk, Virginia-based (but Bronx born) brothers Gene “Malice” and Terrence “Pusha T” Thornton began busting out rhymes under the pseudonym of Clipse. Meeting well-known producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (of The Neptunes) a year later, Clipse successfully began catapulting their immense hip-hop skills into the limelight under a working relationship with the two producers. With Williams’ help, the two scored a contract with Elektra Records in 1997, and although they released an initial failure of a debut single, Williams revived the duo’s career by signing them to his own Artista Records in 2001. Released in August 2002, their debut album, Lord Willin’, opened at #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart and #4 on the Billboard Hot 200, and with Rolling Stone hailing the record as “unrepentant playa-rap” with “beats (that) never miss”, it reached certified gold only a month later. After a label merger, Clipse fell under production of Jive Records, and although the second album, Hell Hath No Fury, opened with critical acclaim, the album’s modest selling led the two to eventually part ways with the company and to sign with Columbia Records in 2007. Under the guidance of their new record label, the duo released their third album, Til the Casket Drops, this past December. Featuring production by not only the Neptunes, but also Sean “Diddy” Combs’ production team The Hitmen and DJ Kahlil, the album is yet another testament to Clipse’s rhyming skills and solid standing on the hip-hop scene.

Supported by some all-star acts, there’s NO way you want to miss two of hottest names in hip-hop roll through one of the best hip-hop venues in town. Thanks for the post! I saw Clipse in Austin at Fun Fun Fun…2 years ago maybe? Time eludes me. Anyway, it was my first time to ever hear of Clipse, much less see them live. It was amazing! Great show, great music. Definitely worth it!

@Jay: Was not aware of that. My bad. I feel let down. Disappointed.
