G. Love & Special Sauce w/ Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad 4/3

After embarking on their U.S. tour earlier this month, alternative blues/hip-hop collective G. Love & Special Sauce are rolling into Austin this Saturday (April 3rd) with reggae/experimental Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad to play what will surely be an unforgettable show at Antone’s.

The show this Saturday marks the first time, out of 500 shows played over the past 3 years, that Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad will have ever played in the great state of Texas. Performing their own brand of “relentless reggae sound” at numerous venues and festivals over the years, GPGDS comes to Austin off an album (LIVE UP!) released last November, which managed to debut at number 2 on iTunes’ Reggae Chart. Previously a six-piece group, the current quartet has played alongside some of reggae’s greatest names including Toots And The Maytals, The Wailers, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Steel Pulse, Israel Vibration, Yellowman, Culture, The Meditations, Don Carlos, Morgan Heritage, Midnite, Mad Professor, and Edi Fitzroy, and they’ve developed quite a widespread grassroots following of their own. This Saturday, GPGDS brings what the Washington Post describes as “heavy, air-tight dub and roots reggae pressure” to us Austinites as they tour the country with G. Love & Special Sauce.

As an alternative blues and hip-hop group hailing from Philly, G. Love & Special Saucegi, comprised of Garrett Dutton (a.k.a G. Love) alongside Jeffrey Clemens (drums), Mark Boyce (keyboards), and Timo Shanko (bass), are more than just veterans of the music scene. Formed way back in 1993, the band has seen about 14 albums released (some being solo efforts from G. Love), and over the years have embarked on several US and world tours. They were first credited for pioneering a new sound–something of a blues/rock/rap style–that has now become an integral part of the sounds we hear today. And with influences ranging from Bob Marley, Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest, Bob Dylan, and Robert Johnson, they continue to successfully churn out pure, refreshing, organic, summer sounds that satisfy the masses. This is by no means the first time that G. Love & Special Sauce have played in Austin, but it’s sure to be a fantastic show!
