SlamOff 2010: Austin Poetry Slam Finals 4/21

Ever since last May, poets from across Austin have been competing against each other in “poetry slams”–bringing their manipulation of words into a “lyrical boxing match” of sorts, vying for a coveted spot on the team that is to represent Austin at this year’s National Poetry Slam held in St. Paul, Minnesota. With months of hard work and proven audience engagement, 10 poets remain standing: Phil Aulie, Eric B, Kevin Burke, Big Poppa E, Gidon, Christopher Lee, Lacey Roop, Peter Nevland, DNY Strack, and Seth Walker, and they all hope to place in the top 5 this Wednesday, April 21st at the SlamOff 2010 so that they can continue on to the national level.

Invented back in the 80’s by a construction worker-turned-poetry master, today poetry slams have been referred to as “the competitive art of performance poetry”. As the movement and involvement of people in slams have exponentially increased over the past 30 years, each event sees poem pitted against poem and poet against poet in 3-minute performances judged “Olympic-style” with decimals on a scale from one to ten. Not only does the poet have to come prepared with a piece that will shock/move/impress the audience, but judging also takes into consideration the poet’s performance, delivery, and verve (and occasionally theater, stand-up comedy, and strip tease?). Unlike any musical or theater performance, however, the poets have no props, costumes, or music–they only have their words and the direct effect of their poetry on the audience.

This year’s SlamOff will be taking place at ND at 501 Studios (previously known as The Independent) on Wednesday starting around 8 PM. For only $12 you can watch as the final 10 battle it out for a spot on TEAM AUSTIN 2010. Hosted by Austin Slammaster Mike Henry, the event also offers musical mastery from the likes of DJ SLIPP, the beatboxing comedic skills of Joshua Walters, and a farewell set by 6-time member of the Austin Poetry Slam Team, Tony Jackson (who apparently is moving somewhere far away and cold). Doors open at 7PM, so make sure you come in and get a good seat and check out the new balcony area of The ND.

For more information on how to get tickets, head over to the event page. Make sure you click “I Like It!” for a chance to win one of THREE pairs of FREE tickets! It’s SLAMOFF time… so, see ya Wednesday!
